Located where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the southern plains, near the Pecos River, the 24,536-acre Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 to provide habitat for thousands of migrating sandhill cranes and waterfowl. The Refuge is well-known its diverse flora and fauna.
