  "The first national academy founded under the Choctaw Nation's Education Act of 1842," Wheelock Academy is a National Historic Landmark that is owned and administered by the Choctaw Nation. Listed as one of America’s “eleven most endangered historic places” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Wheelock Academy was the archetype for the tribal school system of the Five Civilized Tribes.
