Once the fastest way to travel over the Allegheny Mountains, the Allegheny Portage Railroad is a system of inclined planes and the historic 900-foot Staple Bend Tunnel, which was carved through solid rock by Welsh coalminers. Visitors can see a historic tavern, the Lemon House; hike, bike, view replicas of the buildings, or browse the many exhibits and models in the visitor center. The Staple Bend Tunnel unit is located four miles east of Johnstown, PA. The Allegheny Portage Railroad offers many special events and tours each year.
