Originally built in 1771 and used by the U.S. Army until 1952, Fort Mifflin is the only Revolutionary War battlefield completely intact. The “site of the largest bombardment the North American continent has ever witnessed,” it was here that the "garrison was ordered by General George Washington to hold off the British Navy so the Continental Army could make its way to their winter encampment at Valley Forge." This battle lasted five weeks. Tours of Fort Mifflin, a National Historic Landmark, include 14 authentically restored buildings which were constructed from 1778 to 1875.
