Dedicated to the Philadelphia-style celebration of New Years Day, this museum presents extensive and colorful exhibits of memorabilia to demonstrate this local tradition. The Mummers tradition dates back to 400 B.C. and the Roman Festival of Saturnalia where Latin laborers marched in masks throughout the day and exchanged gifts. In Philadelphia, the tradition dates to before the Revolutionary War, with the first "official" parade held on January 1, 1901.
