In the summer of 1754, Fort Necessity National Battlefield was the location of the first battle of the French and Indian War. It was also the first major event in the military career of George Washington and the only time he ever surrendered to an enemy. Visitors can enjoy a reconstructed Fort Necessity, Mount Washington Tavern museum, built as a stagecoach stop on the National Road; a picnic area, and the visitor center. Educational programs and special programs and events are held throughout the year.
