Probably built around 1796, the restored Oliver Watson House is the oldest structure on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. A typical Rhode Island Colonial two-story farmhouse, the Oliver Watson House "stands today as testimony to the University's humble beginnings as the College of Agricultural Mechanic Arts." A former women's dormitory, home of Lambda Chi fraternity, tea room operated by the Department of Home Economics, nursery school and more, it was the first of the school's buildings to be equipped with an indoor water closet. The period furnished Watson House is open by appointment.
