A historic structure that is exemplary of the best in Victorian architecture and design, Chateau-sur-Mer was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore but was remodeled and redecorated in the Second Empire French-style in the 1870's, by George Peabody Wetmore, a former Governor of Rhode Island and United States Senator. Chateau-sur-Mer is a National Historic Landmark.
