Before becoming the winter residence of the elegant Gammell family during the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century home of Providence utility, real estate and trolley mogul, Marsden Perry, this was home to John Brown, a businessman, patriot, politician, China Trade pioneer and slave trader, and later his daughters and their families. This three-story mansion is filled with period furnishings and decorative arts. Many original Brown family pieces are in the mansion, including a nine-shell desk and bookcase, considered to be one of the finest pieces of American Colonial furniture in existence.
