The Federal-style John Mark Verdier House is the only planter's house in Beaufort that is open to the public. The house served as army headquarters and the adjutant general's office during the Union occupation of Beaufort (1861-1865). The John Mark Verdier House Museum features three permanent exhibits. These relate to Robert Smalls, Civil War photos by Samuel Cooley, and the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery. Docent-guided tours begin every hour on the half hour from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, except holidays.
