Open to the public since 1872, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry and the oldest public garden in the United States. There are several tours to choose from when visiting Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. During the tour of the Plantation House, visitors will learn about the Drayton family and the fate of the two homes that was once stood on this spot. This grand home features 10 rooms which are open to the public. Each is furnished with early-American antiques, quilts porcelain, and Drayton family heirlooms. The tram tour will take you through the plantation’s lakes, forest, wetlands, and marshes to view the property’s abundant wildlife. “From Slavery to Freedom” brings history alive when you sit in a recreated 19th century slave cabin and hear guides tell the stories of the slaves that once worked the land.
