Built as a residence for officers of the Arsenal Military Academy and spared during the burning of Columbia in the Civil War, the Mansion was selected as the official residence for the state's governors in 1868. Two other houses, the Lace House and the Caldwell-Boylston House, are located on the nine-acre grounds. Governor's Mansion staff and the gift shop are presently located in the circa 1830, Greek Revival-style Caldwell-Boylston House. Built in 1854, the Lace House is the official guesthouse for the state of South Carolina.
