A special ministry of the South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Chapel in the Hills is an exact reproduction of the famous Borgund Stavkirke of Laerdal. Housed in a "Stabbur," an authentic grass-roofed store house built in Norway; the visitor center and gift shop feature information about the chapel and its ministry and an extensive assortment of Scandinavian-themed items. An authentic log cabin museum on the grounds includes items brought over from Norway or made by Scandinavians in this country during the 1800's. The chapel, gift shop, and museum are open from 7:00 a.m. until dusk, seven days a week, from May through September.
