Built for the Union Army by black labor, by order of General James S. Negley, to defend Nashville against Confederate Army attacks, Fort Negley became the largest inland stone Union fortification west of Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. The restored Fort is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
