This cottage was the home of William Sydney Porter for two of the thirteen years that he lived in Austin. Porter, better known by his pen name O. Henry, was known as the master of the short story, because of his tales in which much use was made of dramatic and poignant irony that would add an unexpected twist at the ends of most of his stories. The cottage now houses memorabilia that recalls Porter's years in Austin, during which he worked at various occupations, such as bank teller, pharmacist, draftsman and reporter--- short-lived vocations that gave the writer experiences that later helped shape his fiction.
