On the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps I found myself in a waiting room at the hospital. A man about fifty-five walked by wearing a camouflaged coat and a military hat. I instinctively asked him about his service and wished him a happy Veterans' Day tomorrow. He told me he wears that particular hat for his father who fought on Iwo Jima. Soon he took me back in a recovery room to chat with him.



Within fifteen minutes the son was standing beside his father's hospital bed with tears running down his fifty-five-year-old face. He was proud of his dad and what he had done for Uncle Sam. I am sure that he also was glad that God had allowed his daddy to survive. One thing the elderly Marine said, "I was using my Sergeant's binoculars when a Japanese bullet zinged past my ear. I was glad he was a bad shot!"

What a blessing it was to thank one more Marine who had risked his life for our freedom on the sands of Iwo Jima!
