Built along the banks of the Concho River "to protect frontier settlements, patrol and map the vast west Texas region and quell hostile threats in the area" in 1867, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark is a historic preservation project and museum owned and operated by the City of San Angelo that includes 23 original and restored structures. Used until 1889, Fort Concho is considered to be the best preserved site of its kind in the United States.
