Originally named Mission San Antonio de Velaro, this historic site commemorates the 1836 siege and battle that took place here between American rebels, fighting for the independence of Texas; and the Mexican Army. This battle was the last stand for the brave volunteers that included the legendary heroes Colonel William B. Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett. The Alamo was originally built as a Spanish mission in 1724, so visitors to this site can explore a rich and interesting history.
