"A National Historic Landmark and the only house in the United States designated a UNESCO World Heritage site," Monticello has been maintained and kept open to the public by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc., which owns over 2,500 acres of Jefferson's 5,000-acre plantation; for more than 90 years. Close to 60 percent of the furnishings on display at Monticello are or may be items original to Jefferson. Other items are period pieces or reproductions of original pieces. A multitude of tours are available.
