James Monroe, our nation's fifth president, began his illustrious career practicing law in Fredericksburg and this museum contains a remarkable collection of the personal possessions, furnishings, and papers of Monroe and his wife Elizabeth James Monroe. A memorial garden is also on the grounds which includes a bronze bust of James Monroe by Margaret French Cresson, daughter of Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
