Built around 1768, the restored St. James' House is one of the few 18th century frame houses still standing in Fredericksburg. It was originally home to James Mercer, an attorney, who drew up the will for Mary Washington; a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and the first judge of the General Court in Fredericksburg. The house was built on land once owned by Fielding Lewis, George Washington's brother-in-law. It is known for its collection of antique furniture and decorative arts.
