This National Historic Landmark was a gift from Robert "King" Carter, one of the wealthiest and most influential citizens in colonial America. Built in the shape of a cross, it is recognized as the finest colonial church in North America. Original limestone slabs still pave the floor. It contains colonial Virginia's only surviving high-backed box pews. The "museum features artifacts, documents, displays, and exhibits that tell the story of Christ Church, its builder, and the Church of England in colonial Virginia within the context of early American settlement and the trans-Atlantic world."
