A sanctuary for orphaned, non-releasable or injured animals, the Virginia Living Museum is home to more than 250 species of animals native to Virginia, including reptiles, mammals, birds, and fish. It features "one of the largest displays of native plants in the Commonwealth of Virginia." The digital, state-of-the-art Abbitt Planetarium Theater offers a fully digital simulation of the sky. Other highlights of the Virginia Living Museum include a trackway of almost 2,000 fossil footprints of dinosaurs and other reptiles left nearly 210 million years ago, fossil wall, a cross section made to resemble sites along the James River near Chippokes State Park; cave formations, exhibits of some common cave creatures, and animal encounters.
