The boyhood home of Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, the brothers who signed the Declaration of Independence, this plantation also became the birthplace of General Robert E. Lee in 1807. The Great Hall in the center of the house is one of the most architecturally significant rooms to survive from colonial America and the 1,670 acre plantation is managed as a working farm with costumed interpreters leading tours through the house. A log cabin dining room serves lunch daily and a visitor center and gift shop are also on the property.
