Virginia's oldest plantation, this plantation was settled in 1613. Knowledgeable interpreters in the main house offer a unique look at the Hill-Carter family, who have lived at Shirley continuously for nearly four centuries. The main house, begun in 1723, reflects Queen Anne architecture and it features a famous square three-story flying stairway that is unique to North America. Visitors can explore seven original early 18th century brick outbuildings, four of which form a rare Queen Anne Forecourt, while at this plantation.
