Originally part of William Byrd's Westover Plantation and named for his daughter, Evelyn, this plantation was first purchased by Edmund Ruffin Jr., namesake of the famed Virginia agriculturist who fired the first shot of the Civil War at Fort Sumter. The plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the house, lush grounds, and gardens are open daily for guided tours.
