Designated a State Natural Area in 1952, the Cedarburg Bog is "one the largest and most outstanding wetlands remaining in southeastern Wisconsin." Owned primarily by the DNR and the University of Wisconsin, the Cedarburg Bog consists of large expanses of cedar-tamarack swamp forest, marshes, shrub carrs, swamp hardwoods, deep and shallow bog lakes and a string or "patterned" bog with stunted cedars and tamaracks.
