This canal was dug using shovels and wheelbarrows in 1838 and was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1876. The canal was 2.3 miles long, 75 feet wide, 7 feet deep, and served as a connection between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River.
