Following the reverses at Rich Mountain and Corrick's Ford, the Confederates established Camp Bartow. On October 3, 1861 the Battle of Greenbrier River occurred, resulting in the withdrawal of Union troops to Cheat Summit Fort. Confederate trenches are visible on the open hillside southeast of the present-day motel.
