Proclaimed the first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, this 1,347-acre park covered with pine forests, woodlands and grasslands rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Also known as Mato Tipila (Bears Lodge), Devils Tower is a sacred site for many American Indians. Made of phonolite porphyry, the 865-foot Devils Tower's top is "about the size of a football field."
