Originally built in 1892, the Windsor was fashioned after the finest hosteliers of late 19th century Europe. The hotel incorporates a pleasantly eclectic mix of architectural elements, noticed especially in the turret and round tower, and in the unusual array of window styles. The five-story castle-like building occupies nearly an entire city block in historic downtown Americus, and was built as a destination for northern hunters and vacationers looking for the mild winters of the south. A total of 8-million dollars has since 1991 been invested in different restoration projects that have revitalized the 53 guest rooms--each with high ceilings, ceiling fans, plantation shutters and high speed Internet service--as well as the round tower suites, balconies and the golden-oak-trimmed, three-story atrium lobby. The suite has accommodated various famous and infamous guests over the years. It is rumored that John Dillinger or Al Capone spent the night in the Suite with an armed bodyguard posted at the foot of the stairs.
