Historic Homes & Buildings

Oak Hill (circa 1847) Located at Highway 27 & Veterans Memorial Highway, 706-291-1883, Situated on a beautiful 170 acre estate, this classic Old South, Greek Revival mansion was the lifelong home of educator Martha McChesney Berry, the founder of Berry College and one of the most influential people in North Georgia. Formal and sunken gardens, nature trails, and a museum that retells the life story of Berry are also on the estate.

Capitoline Wolf, The 601 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161, 706-295-5576, “A gift from ancient Rome to new Rome,” this statue is an exact replica of the Etruscan art that stands in the Palazzo Dei Conservatori in Rome, Italy, and it was a gift from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in 1929. map

Clock Tower Museum (circa 1871) 404 Civic Center Drive, Rome, GA 30162, 706-236-4416, Listed on the on the National Register of Historic Places, this clock tower stands 104 feet tall with a diameter of nine feet and the clock has an incredible record for accuracy. Visitors can walk up the spiral staircase and take in the panoramic views of the city's hills and rivers. map

Myrtle Hill Cemetery P.O. Box 5823, Rome, GA 31062, Located at Broad and Mrytle Streets, 706-295-5576, One of the most beautiful cemeteries in the nation, this National Register cemetery was begun in 1857 and is the final resting place for more than 20,000 people who have shaped Rome's history. First Lady Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson, is buried at this cemetery, as well as the young man selected as the "Known Soldier" from World War I and 377 soldiers who died in Civil War battles around Rome.

Robert Eubanks is featured at this natural history museum and gallery that features personal artifacts from around the world, including trophy animals from Africa and India, as well as an extensive collection of Early American hardware, Native American pottery, tools, and hunting items. map

Rome Area History Museum 305 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161, 706-235-8051, Exhibits at this history museum focus on the Civil War, the Cherokee Indians, cotton, and commerce. A Gone With The Wind exhibit is also featured which includes photos, collectibles, and costumes from the book and movie. map


National Parks & Natural Wonders

Marshall Forest Located on Horseleg Creek Road, 706-291-2121, A National Natural Landmark, this lush, 170 acre forest is the only virgin forest within a city's limits in the United States. The forest includes 90 acres of fields and 80 acres of forests, as well as about 300 species of wildflowers and other plants which grow on the Flower Glen Trail.
