Recreation Areas

Sawtooth National Recreation Area 208-727-5000, 756,000 acres of the Sawtooth National Forest were set apart as the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in 1972, at which time the 217,000-acre Sawtooth Primitive Area was designated as the Sawtooth Wilderness Area. It contains four mountain ranges, the Sawtooths, Boulders, White Clouds and Smokies; more than 50 major peaks over 10,000 feet, 300 lakes, 250 miles of trails, more than 1,000 high mountain lakes, and the headwaters of four major Idaho rivers, the Salmon, South Fork of the Payette, the Boise and the Big Wood. Activities visitors enjoy include fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, bird watching, camping, cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, picnicking, snowshoeing, and kayaking.
