Historic Homes & Buildings

Court Square Main Street, Between Court and Elm Streets, The heart of the city since 1812, Court Square is surrounded by the Old First Church (1819), the Byers Block (1835), H.H. Richardson's courthouse (1871) and the neo-classical Municipal Complex (1909).

Forest Park Heights Historic District Sumner Avenue from Longhill Street to Forest Park, Its 600 houses reflect the architectural styles popular from 1890 to 1920. Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel's boyhood home was on Fairfield Street. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Maple Hill Historic District Upper Maple Street, The region's most stately homes, some listed in the National Register of Historic Places, were erected here from the 1820's - 1920's. Nearby is Mulberry Street, made famous by Springfield native Dr. Seuss.

McKnight Historic District Upper Worthington Street, Developed as a "streetcar suburb" between 1870 and 1900. With 900 houses, it is the largest and most cohesive wood-frame neighborhood from the late Victorian period in New England. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
