Charlotte Shakespeare's 2012 main stage season kicks off with The Tempest May 31 through June 17 as The Green uptown transforms into the magical island where Prospero and his daughter are exiled. Picnic under the stars as magic, monsters, romance, and comedy all collide in one of Shakespeare's final plays. Directed by guest artist Matt Cosper. For performances at The Green, patrons are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and may bring food and beverages (including alcohol), if desired. The festival's popular pre-show performance series, Festivities, will return for a third year. Considered to be one of Shakespeare's most controversial plays, The Merchant of Venice explores the eternal war among religions and the battle between the sexes. Jewish moneylender Shylock loans money to the Christian merchant Antonio and later demands to be paid a "pound of flesh." Directed by Elise Wilkinson, Charlotte Shakespeare's Artistic Director.
