Historic Homes & Buildings

Cherry Mansion (circa 1830) 265 Main Street, Savannah, TN 38372, 731-607-1208, Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Cherry Mansion served as headquarters for General U. S. Grant in the spring of 1862. It was here that Grant's breakfast was interrupted by couriers with the news that the battle of Shiloh had begun. Tours are offered by appointment only. Grant Headquarters Monument can be found one block east.

Savannah Historic District & Historic Trail 731-925-8181, 17 privately owned historical homes and one commercial building can be found in Savannah's historic district. Situated along the banks of the Tennessee River, the Savannah Historic Trail is located within the Wayne Jerrolds Riverside Park. It includes historic markers, reader boards, walkways and seating areas.


Historic Sites & Monuments

Alex & Queen Haley Burial Site Located in the Savannah Cemetery, 731-925-8181, The paternal grandparents of the famous Roots author, Alex Haley, Alex and Queen Haley were Hardin County residents at one time. Alex Haley, Sr. came to Savannah around 1880 and became the ferryman of Savannah Landing operating a ferry, Rudd’s Ferry. Queen Haley worked in the Cherry Mansion for the Cherry Family.

Coon Creek Science Center 2983 Hardin Graveyard Road, Adamsville, TN 38310 , 731-632-4850 or 901-320-6320, McNairy County's Coon Creek Science Center contains one of the most important fossil sites in North America. Here are preserved Upper Cretaceous marine shells and vertebrate remains that were left 70 million years ago when the water of the Gulf of Mexico receded. Shiloh Indian Mounds National Historic Landmark The finest Mississippian Moundbuilder village in the Tennessee Valley, overlooking the Tennessee River on a bluff, the Shiloh Indian Mounds National Historic Landmark is comprised of six platform mounds which are surrounded by over three dozen separate house mounds and an encircling palisade.

Shiloh National Military Park 1055 Pittsburg Landing Road (Highway 22), Shiloh, TN 38376, Located 10 Miles Southwest, 731-689-5696 , 800-552-3866 , On April 6 & 7, 1862, thousands of Civil War troops fought on 4,200 acres near Pittsburgh Landing in the first major battle in the western theater. Hundreds of monuments, cannons, and historic markers can be found here. A 10-mile self-guided driving tour begins at the Visitors Center, which features a 25-minute orientation film. more...

McNairy County Historical Museum 114 North 3rd Street, Selmer, TN 38375, 731-646-0018, Housed in the historic Ritz Theater Building, the McNairy County Historical Museum's seven rooms offer displays on various aspects of life in the early McNairy County. The Museum is open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.
