During the 1920s and early 1930s, Galveston was host to the Pageant of Pulchritude (predecessor to the Miss Universe Pageant) which has now been resurrected by Islander By Choice, LLC (IBC) as a two-day, family friendly event dubbed the Galveston Island Beach Revue. The sixth annual event kicks off on Friday night with live music, an introduction of the 2014 bathing beauties and a free outdoor showing of Girl Happy starring Elvis Presley. Saturdays event includes Retro-Active games for the kids, charcoal championship cook-off, craft beer tastings, vendors and demonstrations, all leading up to the Bathing Beauties contest and an evening of live music headlined by Grand Old Grizzly. The highlight of the weekend is the Bathing Beauties Contest when 40 contestants compete in vintage and vintage-inspired swimwear for cash prizes as well as Crowd Favorite and Most Beautiful Back categories. Beach Revue events will take place adjacent to the hotel at Beach Central and are free to the public. more
