20 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the Barrier Islands Center features a collection of antique memorabilia and three historically significant buildings. The detailed Barrier Islands Museum offers visitors insight into "the history, culture and artifacts of the abandoned islands." A working farm, the Almshouse Farm's three historically significant buildings allow visitors to view "the living conditions and culture of the rural poor in the 19th century south." Situated at the historic Chatham Farm, a working farm for four centuries, the high-density, European-style Chatham Vineyards contains more than 30,000 Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot vines.
