The House on the Rock Attraction began as a 14-room house in the 1940's to what is now a complex of many buildings, exhibits and garden displays. Situated on the 60-foot sandstone Deer Shelter Rock, overlooking the Wyoming Valley, the House on the Rock consists of rooms, streets, buildings and gardens that cover over 200 acres. A bell gallery, waterfalls, massive fireplaces, walls of rock and glass, oriental art, stained glass lamps, bronze statuary, a three-story bookcase filled with rare books, glass cocktail table, 3,264 windows, and more can be viewed at the extraordinary House on the Rock, "an architectural marvel." A stately Italianate-style home situated atop a hill on 11 acres, the S.V. Shipman-designed Orchard Lawn/Gundry House is the home of the Mineral Point Historical Society. Orchard Lawn has hosted weddings on the formal lawn, live music on the front porch, and theatre performances in the double parlor. Owned and operated by the State Historical Society, Pendarvis is a historic site interpreting the history of Cornish settlement and Wisconsin's lead-mining heyday. "Costumed interpreters offer guided tours through the Pendarvis complex, recalling the days when Mineral Point was a rough and tumble lead mining camp. They explain what brought the Cornish, with their expert knowledge of mining and stone masonry, their Celtic superstitions and their frugal foodways, to settle in this Shake Rag neighborhood."
