Russian Bishop's House (circa 1842) 201 College Drive, Sitka, AK 99835, 907-747-6281, This is the oldest intact Russian building in Sitka. Originally built as the residence of the Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, it has been restored to the 1850's historic period when it functioned as a school, Bishop's residence, and a chapel. Saint Michael's Cathedral (circa 1844-48) Lincoln Street, Sitka, AK 99835, Located in Downtown Sitka, 907-747-8120, An important collection of Russian Orthodox art and church treasures are found at Saint Michael's Cathedral. While the church was destroyed in 1966, many of the icons and religious objects were salvaged. They are now in the rebuilt structure. Listed on the National Register of Historical Places. |

Sitka National Historic Park 103 Monastery Street, Sitka, AK 99835, 907-747-6281, This 107-acre park contains the site of a Tlingit Indian Fort and features a collection of Haida & Tlingit totem poles as well as an exhibit of Tlingit and Russian artifacts. The park's story continues at the Russian Bishop's House, one of the last surviving examples of Russian colonial architecture in North America. This original 1843 log structure conveys the legacy of Russian America through exhibits, refurbished Bishop's living quarters, and lavish icons in the Chapel of the Annunciation. A temperate rain forest setting provides spectacular scenery along the park's coastal trail. The trail circles back along Indian River to the visitor center. Another loop trail continues across the Indian River footbridge past the Memorial to the Russian Midshipmen who died in the Battle of Sitka. more...  |
