Trinity Episcopal Church (circa 1836) 79 Sixth Street, Apalachicola, FL 32329, 850-653-9550, Built in a Greek Revival architectural style, this historic church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features full height fluted Ionic columns on the front facade. The building was prefabricated in New York from white pine and shipped by sea to Apalachicola; peg fasteners were used instead of nails to construct the church. Apalachicola Maritime Museum 103 Water Street, Apalachicola, FL 32320, 850-653-2500, The Maritime Museum has been re founded to celebrate the maritime history of Apalachicola in the form of a maritime museum with active sailing, boat building and restoration and educational programs. Collectively the activities of the AMM will provide a vision into the rich history of the Gulf coastal region and river systems that come together to form the largest river in Florida. The museum was reborn in October of 2007 with the arrival of the L. Francis Herreschoff designed 58' wooden ketch, Quark, into Apalachicola bay. John Gorrie State Museum P.O. Box 267, Apalachicola, FL 32320, Located on 6th Street, One Block East off U.S. 98, 850-653-9347, This museum features a replica of Dr. John Gorrie's ice machine built from the specifications of his patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851. The ice machine was created in an attempt to cool his yellow fever patients and his invention later became the basis for modern air conditioning and refrigeration. Exhibits regarding the history of Apalachicola are also on display. |
