Church-Waddel-Brumby House (circa 1820) 280 East Dougherty Street, Athens, GA 30601, 706-353-1820, Believed to be the oldest surviving house in Athens, this Federalist style house was built for UGA mathematics professor Alonzo Church and it later became home to UGA President Dr. Moses Waddel. The house now serves as the Athens Welcome Center and house museum and is furnished with period antiques. map

Lucy Cobb Institute (circa 1859) 201 North Milledge Avenue, Athens, GA 30602, Located at the University of Georgia, 706-548-2205, Once considered one of the top girls' schools in the nation, this historic collection of buildings of this institute now serves as the central headquarters of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. map


Historic Sites & Monuments

Double-Barreled Cannon Located at College Avenue & Hancock Street, 706-613-3615, Originally designed by John Gilleland of Athens and built at the local foundry in 1863, this one-of-a-kind Civil War cannon was designed to shoot two balls simultaneously with projectiles connected by an eight foot chain, intended to topple approaching infantrymen. The weapon failed and was preserved, instead of dismantled. The cannon has been featured by "Ripley's Believe It or Not."

ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame P.O. Box 1472, Athens, GA 30603, Located on the South Campus of UGA, 706-452-1622, Displaying photographs and equipment of legends of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, this hall of fame honors past collegiate players, coaches, and contributors dating back to 1883 when the first national tennis tournament was held and the hall of fame is usually open during tennis tournaments and matches.

US Navy Supply Corps Museum 1425 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30606, Located at the Navy Supply Corps School, 706-354-7349, Exhibits at this museum show the growth and development of the Navy Supply Corps and explain its many functions historically and in today's Navy. The museum contains a collection of uniforms, ship models, naval artifacts, photographs, and equipment. Museum open Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 5:15, closed on federal holidays.
