Mississippi Palisades State Park 16327-A Illinois Route 84, Savanna, IL 61074, Located 29 Miles West-Southwest, 815-273-2731, Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers, this 2,500-acre park, named for the line of lofty, steep cliffs along the river, is rich in American Indian history. Many caves are evident as well as dangerous sink holes-limestone caves, and intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The park features a 15-mile trail system, campground, fishing, boat launches, picnic areas with playgrounds and toilets, three shelters available to groups of 25 or more, and a concession area open from May 1 to September 15, and holidays. Lazy River Marina 6850 Marina Road, Savanna, IL 61053, 815-273-2851, This marina across from the North entrance to the Mississippi Palisades State Park, offers boat slips and boat repairs. The Frank C. Rand, a retired towboat, is berthed at the marina, and has been converted into a restaurant, lounge and museum.

Savanna Marina 1 Main Street, Savanna, IL 61074, 815-273-2955, This marina is operated by the Savanna Park District and is open to the public. It offers dry docking, slip rentals, launching, overnight boat tie-ups, pump out, campsites, and winter storage.

Great River Bike & Hike Trail 815-589-4545, This 62 mile recreational path extends from the Quad Cities to Savanna, passing through eleven communities and three counties. Those travelling along the trail will be able to view spectacular panoramas of the Mississippi River, Native American mounds, and rookeries of the Great Blue Heron. The Great River Trail is partnered with the Grand Illinois Trail, a 500 mile loop trail around Northern Illinois from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River.

The Smooth Gait Ranch offers trail rides throughout the year, as well as riding lessons and horse training. Reservations are required.

Lynnwood Lynks Golf Course 5020 Illinois Route 84, Savanna, IL 61285, Located in Thomson, IL, 815-259-8278, This 18-hole golf course at Buck's Barn Golf Resort features 5,692 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 69. With a rating of 66.5 and a slope rating of 107, the course is enjoyable for both the average golfer and low handicappers, with tightly guarded fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. The addition of a windmill, horseshoe tee markers, hand-pump water station, and quaint split-rail fences add to the scenic country atmosphere.

Oakville Country Club 8044 Oakville Road, Savanna, IL 61053, Located in Mt. Carroll, IL, 815-684-5295, Located just 11 miles from center of Savanna, this 9-hole public golf course is set up to play 18 holes with different tees for the second nine holes. It features gently rolling hills, and sloped greens and offers 3,111 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par of 36. Designed by Bob Hartman, and opened in 1964, watered fairways, a creek that comes into play on several holes, and three ponds that can also come into play, provide a pleasantly challenging experience for the average gentleman or lady golfer.

Palisades Golf Course 18280 Illinois Route 84, Savanna, IL 61074, This public golf course provides 9 holes of challenging golf, with 2,551 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 33. The course built in 1954, was designed by noted golf course architect, Igor Smith, and features a few dogleg fairways, although the majority of the tree-lined fairways, play straightaway and afford generous landing areas. The course is open Apr. 1 to Nov. 1. A pro shop is on-site.

Savanna Park District Pool 500 Cragmoor, Savanna, IL 61074, Located at the Savanna High School, 815-273-3887, This indoor pool facility, attached to the high school, consists of a 45' x 75' size swimming pool along with a wading pool. It features inside, port-hole wall murals, a deck, and locker rooms which were renovated in 2004. The pool offers times for open swim, lap swim, and parties, as well as group and private lessons, water aerobics classes, and if numbers warrant, classes in low-impact water exercise.
