Its stained glass windows were made in Germany after World War II. |

Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site 57730 Main Street, Plaquemine, LA 70764, 225-687-7158, Bayou Plaquemine was an important waterway from the Mississippi River to the interior of Louisiana from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. In the late 1800s, Congress authorized the construction of a lock here. Designed by Col. George W. Goethals, later the chief engineer of the design and construction of the Panama Canal, construction on the lock began in 1895 and ended in 1909. This state historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes a museum, visitors’ center, and an open air pavilion.  |

DOW Chemicals Plant Tour Rt 1 and Rt 1148, Plaquemine, LA 70764, 225-685-8000, DOW began operating at the site in 1956. Today it is the largest petrochemical plant in Louisiana, with eighteen seperate production units on 1,400 acres of former cane fields. The largest plant of its type in the world, generating enough power to supply Louisiana with electricity. |
