Anne Spencer House and Garden 1313 Pierce Street, Lynchburg, VA 24501, 434-846-0517, This was the home of internationally acclaimed poet, Anne Spencer, who was part of the Harlem Renaissance and was the only Virginian included in the Norton Anthology of Modern American and British Poetry. The garden, which served as inspiration for much of her poetry, was beautifully and authentically restored in the 1980s.  |

Miller Claytor House (circa 1791) P.O. Box 60, Lynchburg, VA 24502, Located at Riverside Park, 434-847-1640, Believed to be the fourth house built in Lynchburg, this historic house is the sole surviving pre-19th century townhouse where Thomas Jefferson allegedly proved to the owner of the house's garden that tomatoes were not poisonous by eating one of the fruit. The home was dismantled in 1936 and rebuilt at its Riverside Park location where the garden was also re-restored. |
