World's First Coca-Cola Outdoor Wall Advertisement (circa 1894) 2 West Main Street, Cartersville, GA 30120, Located on the Side of Young Brothers Pharmacy, 770-382-4010, This sign has been authenticated by the Coca-Cola Company as being Coke's first outdoor painted wall advertisement and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This first-of-its-kind sign was paintbrushed by industrious Coca-Cola syrup salesmen James Couden. map

Noble Hill-Wheeler Memorial Foundation (circa 1923) 2361 Joe Frank Harris Parkway, Cartersville, GA 30123, Located in Cassville, 770-382-3392, Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this building was once the Noble Hill Rosenwald School, the first school in Northwest Georgia constructed with Rosenwald funds that was dedicated specifically to the education of black children. Rose Lawn Museum (circa 1860s) 224 West Cherokee Avenue, Cartersville, GA 30120, 770-387-5162, Once the home of famous evangelist Samuel Porter Jones for whom Nashville's Ryman Auditorium was built, this beautifully restored Victorian mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now used as a house museum which showcases the writings and memorabilia of Sam Jones and Rebecca Latimer Felton, a Bartow Countian who became the first woman to serve in the United States Senate in 1922. more... map


Historic Sites & Monuments

Allatoona Pass Battlefield Located on Old Allatoona Road, 770-387-1357, One of the most intact Civil War battle sites in the nation, this battle was fought on Oct. 5, 1864, and was the first of the Nashville Campaign. The battle is rich both in myth and legend and is one of the most dramatic and tragic episodes of the Civil War. It was also the inspiration for the familiar hymn by Evangelist Peter Bliss, "Hold the Fort." An interpreted trail is on site.

Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area (circa 1863) P.O. Box 487, Cartersville, GA 30120, Located on River Road South, 770-382-4700, Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a site on the Northwest Georgia's Blue & Gray Trail, this remnant of the Antebellum industrial center was started by Mark Anthony Cooper and the remaining cold blast furnace is a memorial to the iron empire. Visitors can hike the trails which lead to the overlook atop the Dam at Lake Allatoona or relax along the banks of the Etowah River while at this historic site.

Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site 813 Indian Mounds Road Southwest, Cartersville, GA 30120, 706-387-3747, Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this historic site is on the Northwest Georgia's Chieftains Trail and is one of Cartersville's most popular attractions. This site was home to several thousand Native Americans from 1000 to 1500 AD and the largest mound on site stands over 63 feet high and covers three acres. An impressive archaeological museum is also on site that includes dioramas and artifacts from the mounds which tell the story of the mysteriously vanished tribe. more...

Euharlee Covered Bridge (circa 1886) 116 Covered Bridge Road, Cartersville, GA 30120, Located in Euharlee, 770-607-2017, Built by Washington W. King, son of freed slave and noted bridge builder Horace King, this bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as a landmark on Georgia's Covered Bridge Trail. The bridge is enhanced by the picturesque 1850s village which surrounds it. map

Friendship Monument, The (circa 1857) One Friendship Plaza, Cartersville, GA 30120, 770-387-1357, Mark Anthony Cooper commissioned this monument to honor 38 friends who aided him when he was in a financial crisis. The monument is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world erected by a debtor to honor his creditors.

Oak Hill Cemetery (circa 1838) Located on North Erwin Street, 770-606-8862, A historic Georgia cemetery which contains the gravesites of notable Georgia residents, such as industrialist Mark Anthony Cooper, horse racing hall of famer Huratio Luro, political duo William and Rebecca Felton, evangelist Sam Jones, Confederate Brigadier General P.M.B. Young, and US Attorney General Amos Akerman.
