Dorchester Academy National Historic Site (circa 1870) Located on on GA 38/US 84, 912-884-2347, Founded as a school for freed slaves by the American Missionary Association, the building standing on the site today is an excellent example of Georgian Revival style architecture built in 1934 and is most famous as being the site of Citizen Training by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights movement. The academy has historic markers, a heritage room, a pavilion, and a barbecue pit on site. |

Fort Morris Historic Site 2559 Fort Morris Road, Hinesville, GA 31320, Located in Midway, 912-884-5999, An earthen fort built during the Revolution to defend the once bustling seaport town of Sunbury, this historic site was rebuilt during the War of 1812 and was later used as a Civil War encampment. The site's museum features exhibits on civilian life and military life during Georgia's Colonial, Revolutionary, and Antebellum past and the grounds include a visitor's center, a one mile nature trail, and picnic sites. more... |

LeConte Woodmanston National Historic Place P.O. Box 179, Hinesville, GA 31320, Located off of Sandy Run Road in Midway, 912-884-6500, Formerly the home of Dr. Louis LeConte, this historic site flourished as one of Georgia's earliest inland swamp rice plantations and is now a natural preserve. Louis LeConte's world-famous 18th century botanical gardens contain a myriad of antique plants and visitors can walk through the cypress forest or walk the interpretative trail along the earthen rice dikes leading through the Bulltown Swamp black-water ecosystem while at this plantation. |

Seabrook Village Located Five Miles East of I-95 via Georgia 38, 912-884-7008, Recreating rural African American culture circa 1865 through the 1930s, this award-winning living history museum features turn-of-the-century buildings, including a one-room school, and exhibits include the grave art of Cyprus Bowens and the Willis Hakjim Jones Material Culture Collection of handmade items. Visitors can try their hand grinding corn into meal and grits and washing clothes on a scrub board while at this museum and costumed interpreters engage in all aspects of village life for planned group tours. |

Fort Stewart Museum 2022 Frank Cochran Drive, Hinesville, GA 31314, Located at Fort Stewart, 912-767-7885, The largest military installation east of the Mississippi River, this museum covers 279,270 acres and traces the histories of the U.S. Army's 3d Infantry Division and the installation. The grounds are a training ground for the National Guard and changing exhibits detailing World War II, the Gulf War, and current military activities are on display at the museum. |

Melon Bluff Nature Preserve 2999 Islands Highway, Hinesville, GA 31313, Located in Midway, 912-884-5779, 888-246-8188, A 3,000 acre, privately owned nature preserve that is located on lands that were once part of an old rice plantation and offers opportunities to view birds in saltmarsh, woodland, and creek swamp habitats. The nature center on site offers exhibits, educational programs, and a gift shop, and, for visitors not up for hiking, mule-pulled wagons will take you through woodlands, swamps, historic abandoned rice fields, and along marshes while guides tell the intriguing history of Melon Bluff. more... |
