This historic Victorian town hall offers, besides its wonderful and striking architecture, a landmark clock tower, the 1648 deed for the purchase of the peninsula from the Native Americans, and the original copy of the famous painting “Spirit of ‘76” painted at the time of the Centennial, 1876, by Archibald M. This Eighteenth Century house, with gardens, features art exhibits by the Marblehead Arts Association, and is named in remembrance of William Hooper, a native who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and matriculated at Harvard University. This historic, waterfront fort affords wonderful panoramic views of Marblehead Harbour, as well as features of historic interest in the fort itself, such as the dungeons and the surrounding sea shanties, and many other features that are of historical and architectural interest; the fort is known for, among other things, its protection and lending of safe harbour to the historic ship The USS Constitution, or “Old Iron Sides,” when it was threatened by two British ships.
