Barbara Fritchie House 154 West Patrick Street, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-698-0630 or 301-698-8992, This is the reconstructed home of Civil War heroine, Barbara Fritchie, who was immortalized by John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "The Ballad of Barbara Fritchie" for confronting troops during the Civil War. Beatty-Cramer Architectural Museum (circa 1732) 9010 Liberty Road, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-668-2086 or 301-668-6088, The Beatty-Cramer House is the oldest known and most architecturally unique standing structure in Frederick County. In-fact it is considered one of the six most important historical houses in Maryland, according to the Maryland Historical Trust. The Beatty-Cramer House Architectural Museum includes three buildings: the Main House, which includes the Beatty House and the 1855 Cramer Addition, the stone Spring House, and the smokehouse. The museum is open for tours the first Saturday of each month from April through October from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and other times by appointment. more... map

City Hall & Courthouse Square (circa 1862) 101 North Court Street, Frederick, MD 21701, "One of the prettiest courthouse squares in America," this Victorian-style building is surrounded by a courtyard which is the location of what is thought to be the first public uprising against the monarchist rule in 1765, when local citizens assembled and burned effigies regarding the Stamp Act. The courtyard features busts of Maryland's first governor, Thomas Johnson and Supreme Court Justice, Roger B. Taney. map

Evangelical Lutheran Church 35 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-663-6361, The current structure, which served as a hospital during the Civil War, was completed in 1854, having replaced a log building built in 1746. Prospect Hall Mansion (circa 1803) 889 Butterfly Lane, Frederick, MD 21703, 301-662-4418, Built on the highest elevation in Frederick City, Red Hill, this historic mansion has hosted many popular visitors. It was the site of General Meade's takeover of the Army of the Potomac immediately before the Battle of Gettysburg. Roddy Road Covered Bridge (circa 1856) Located North of Thurmont Off US Route 15, 301-721-1843, Situated where Roddy Creek Road meets Roddy Road at Owens Creek, this 40 foot, single span, Kingpost designed covered bridge is the smallest of the county's covered bridges. It is listed on the National Historic Register. map

Roger Brooke Taney House (circa 1799) 121 South Bentz Street, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-663-7880, The home of former Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Roger Brooke Taney, and his wife, Anne, this historic house interprets the life of Taney and various aspects of life in early 19th century Frederick County. The property includes the family’s living quarters, a summer kitchen, and slaves’ quarters. Mrs. Taney's brother, Francis Scott Key, writer of the "Star-Spangled Banner," was a frequent guest. Schifferstadt Architectural Museum (circa 1756) 1110 Rosemont Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-668-6088, The oldest building in Frederick and one of the best examples of German-Colonial architecture in the country, this large sandstone home features an unusual "wishbone" divided chimney. Utica Mills Covered Bridge (circa 1850) Utica Road, Frederick, MD 21701, Located Off Old Frederick Road Near Utica, 800-999-3613, This 101-foot long Burr Arch bridge originally spanned the Monocacy River. Due to a horrible storm in 1889, which destroyed it, its remnants were gathered and reconstructed at its current site.  map

Fox's Gap Located in Middletown, 301-371-7090, Fox's Gap features a monument to Union General Jesse Reno, who was killed at this location. Another maker honors Confederate General Samuel Garland, who died here as well. The future President Rutherford B. Hayes was also wounded during this battle.  more... map

Hessian Barracks (circa 1777) 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-228-2888, Originally built to accommodate two battalions of soldiers, these barracks soon became a repository for mercenaries fighting for England. The site is listed with the National and State Registry of Historic Sites and it has been used as a Revolutionary War prison, staging point for Lewis and Clarke expedition, State Armory in 1812, Civil War general hospital, and First Maryland School for the Deaf. map

Jug Bridge Memorial Park and Monument Located on East Patrick Street off I-70, 301-666-8687, In 1965, this 10- ton stone demijohn was relocated from the site of a Monacacy River stone arch bridge, which was constructed in 1808-1809 by Leo Harbaugh, as part of the toll road to the West. This bridge was the site of a decisive Civil War battle which delayed Confederate General Early's march to Washington, D.C. map

Monocacy National Battlefield 4801 Urbana Pike, Frederick, MD 21704, 301-662-3515, An electric map, a self guided auto tour, and four trails interpret the July 9, 1864 battle of Monocacy, known as the "Battle That Saved Washington." Here 18,000 Confederate forces under the command of Lieutenant General Jubal Early and 5,800 Union forces under Major General Lew Wallace marked the last campaign of the Confederacy to carry the war into the north. more... map

St. John's Cemetery (circa 1845) 116 East Second Street, Frederick, MD 21701, 301-662-8288, St. John's is the burial site of United States Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, Maryland's 29th Governor Enoch Louis Lowe, Father John McElroy, the founder of Boston College, and John Boisneuf, one of those who condemned Marie Antoinette, as well as soldiers, politicians, and early Jesuits.
