Basilica of St. James Catholic Church, The (circa 1914) 622 1st Avenue South, Jamestown, ND 58401, 701-252-0119, Consecrated by Bishop O'Reilly of Fargo in 1914, the 140 feet long and 50 feet wide American Gothic-style church is made of trimmed granite and rock faced while the superstructure is of pressed Hebron brick and Bedford stone trimmings. Frontier Village Located at the End of 17th Street Southeast, Jamestown, ND 58402, 701-252-6307 (Summer)/800-222-4766, A re-created prairie town of more than 20 buildings, the Frontier Village features original buildings from the frontier villages of North Dakota have been moved here and filled with antiques and artifacts. The Frontier Village also includes the Kirkpatrick Gallery, Louis L'Amour Writer's Shack, the circa 1880 Northern Pacific Railroad Depot, the first railroad depot in Jamestown; shops selling handmade goods and souvenirs, the General Store, an outdoor amphitheater, stagecoach and pony rides, the World's Largest Buffalo Monument, National Buffalo Museum, and a live herd of buffalo. map

Stutsman County Courthouse State Historic Site (circa 1883) 504 3rd Avenue Southeast, Jamestown, ND 58401, 701-328-2666, Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Gothic Revival-style, two-story Stutsman County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in North Dakota. Privately owned, the Stutsman County Courthouse is not open to the public. map

Fort Seward and Flags Across America 605 10th Avenue Northwest, Jamestown, ND 58401, 701-251-1875, An active military fort from 1872-1877, Fort Seward now houses an interpretive center that displays artifacts that have been excavated from the site's archaeological digs, Flags Across America, North Dakota's largest America flag; a Veterans' Memorial and views of the James River Valley. Trail and Birthplace of Louis L'Amour 404 Louis L'Amour Lane, Jamestown, ND 58402, Located in Downtown Jamestown, 701-251-9145, The birthplace of Louis L'Amour, a world-renowned western author; Jamestown's downtown area offers a self-guided walking tour which includes the author's childhood home, elementary school, the family's church and the Alfred Dickey Public Library.

Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site Located 23 Miles Southeast of Kulm, 701-328-2666 or 701-396-7731, Considered "the fiercest clash between Indians and white soldiers in North Dakota," Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site is the location where many Indian men, women and children died or were captured on September 3, 1863, "when General Alfred Sully's troops attacked a tipi camp of Yanktonai, some Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota and Blackfeet (Sihasapa Lakota); as part of a military mission to punish participants of the Dakota Conflict of 1862." About six miles southwest of Merricourt, Whitestone Battlefield State Historic Site includes a portion of the battlefield, museum with exhibits, two monuments and a fieldstone shelter. National Buffalo Museum and Bison Herd 500 17th Street Southeast, Jamestown, ND 58401, Located at the Frontier Village, 701-252-8648 or 800-807-1511, Near the intersection of Highway 281 and Interstate 94, the National Buffalo Museum focuses primarily on the history of bison in the plains. Exhibits include Plains Indian artifacts, artwork, 19th century firearms used by bison hunters; remains of prehistoric bison, a children’s room featuring wildlife of North Dakota, and a video presentation about the history of bison. A gift shop, educational programs, community events and a bison herd of about 30 head that includes White Cloud, a rare albino “White Buffalo;” and her two calves, can also be enjoyed at the National Buffalo Museum. more...
